Procurement Heads smash Dorset cycle challenge for MacMillan Cancer Support

It may only be early September but autumn is definitely making its’ presence known. On Sunday morning it was just 3 degrees when Rupert Gaster and the Procurement Heads team gingerly stepped outside of their cars in shorts and cycle gear in Wareham to face the infamous Dorset Etape cycle route to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Despite the cold start, the day bloomed into a beautiful Indian summer scorcher with temperatures reaching well over 20 degrees, but with 108 miles and 7,500 feet of climbs ahead of them the team of eight had little time to lie back and soak up the rays.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Etape route, it incorporates at least five mammoth hills which can take even the hardiest of cyclist at least fifteen minutes to complete from base to peak. This is then followed by an almost sheer drop to the bottom leaving little time for recovery before the next hill rears its’ impressive head. Luckily, once the team had battled and overcome each mini Everest their route opened out between Bridport and Weymouth and they could take in some much needed recovery time whilst finally getting to appreciate their surroundings.

Six hours later they had overcome an impressive climb at Lulworth Cove and the finish line was well and truly in sight. Having burned the equivalent of two days’ worth of calories the team finished the final leg of the course through sheer will power alone, managing to complete the whole challenge in six hours and forty five minutes.

Despite the physical and mental challenges the day presented, Rupert and the team experienced an inspiring day, seamlessly run by the Rotary Club of Wareham who streamlined the event and made sure volunteers were there to cheer participants on at every turn and every peak.

More importantly they made giant inroads into achieving their £1,000 target, with one team members’ office chipping in over £250 to support them and help raise vital funds for Macmillan.

Since returning to work on Monday the support has continued to flood in with generous donations from friends, family, business associates and many more.
