Recruitment, procurement and the mission for potential

In the last few days I have seen more than one article dedicated to the importance of recognising talent with transferable skills in the current procurement market. In Supply Management, Paul Snell talks about Buyers being the new recruiters, such is the synergy of skills between each profession.

Helen Gilbert takes this further when she looks at finding and attracting talent from outside of procurement. Her article focuses on the importance of hiring managers, recruiters and other decision makers remaining receptive to talent in other business areas rather than restricting their search to those with proven experience and relevant professional qualifications from the field.

As specialists in procurement recruitment we recognise this and openly endorse an open minded attitude when it comes to recruiting. One of our toughest challenges as recruiters can be convincing the businesses that we work with that candidates from a non-procurement related background can have as much if not more to offer than a ‘born and bred, dyed in the wool’ procurement  professional.

A good example of this can be taken from interview feedback we recently received.  One of our candidates ticked all the boxes in terms of experience but the hiring manager couldn’t see them fitting into the team or company culturally. Conversely, their counterpart from a different sector entirely had just the right ‘transferable’ qualities to hit the ground running and they subsequently offered them the role.

Whilst this scenario isn’t common place it’s still important to recognise that attracting talent from outside of procurement will not only create a diverse and more rounded base of skills and experience, but will ensure we further develop the procurement talent pool.
