About Me – Why I chose to move to Procurement Heads

As an established recruiter within the procurement sector I’ve always been aware of Procurement Heads’ reputation, particularly within the Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey, Sussex and London markets which is where the core of our business focus is currently.  My fiancée and I have been planning a move back to Hampshire for some time now and knowing the team are Winchester based it seemed like a logical step for me to approach Rupert Gaster (MD) back in January to see if there might be an opportunity for me here.

Fast forward to March and I’m walking into the office on my first day to lead the company’s expansion into Berkshire and the M4 Corridor region!

Really excited about the next few months.  Things are progressing well, and just three weeks in I have to say I’m left with an overriding sense of just how determined the team here are to do things differently.  I realise this is a phrase you might hear a lot from recruiters but with Procurement Heads it really is so refreshing to work with a group of likeminded individuals who are truly innovative in their approach to their work.  Just one small example of this, but I’ve found it really interesting to be part of a team who Vlog their job updates on YouTube.  Face-to-face contact is so important in this business and video blogs provide such an effective platform for this, enabling us to engage with our audience with so much more transparency than a standard job advert and deliver a succinct and uniquely positioned overview of each recruitment project we’re working on.

This transparency is mirrored in the company’s approach to relationship-building too.  It is not just a short-term fix we’re providing here and there is a clear and ever-present message from the team that the end goal is to become brand ambassadors for the organisations we chose to support.  People are at the heart of our business and we don’t recruit by numbers.  To this end, we are encouraged to get out and meet with everyone we work with to really understand them, their drivers and culturally what makes them tick meaning we can then match people to opportunities so much more effectively.

As you might be able to tell from my style of writing, I’m a very enthusiastic person, totally open to new ideas about how to do things better, manage my time more effectively, work smarter etc.  This is something I’m constantly re-evaluating inside and outside of work and I find it fascinating seeing and hearing how other people approach the running of a successful recruitment desk.  I’ve always felt we learn the most from those around us, and particularly from those who inspire and challenge us from a work perspective to do things differently.  I’ve found the environment that Rupert and the team have created here to be perfect for this.  The office is quite literally a melting pot of ideas and a great mix of personalities and activity across a wide variety of business sectors.

I must say I’ve been overwhelmed by how warmly I’ve been welcomed into the fold here too. In my first week I was pulled out of retirement and offered the opportunity to pull on a football jersey for the first time in quite a while and join the company 5-a-side team.  Organised by Procurement Heads very own answer to Lionel Messi – Martin Smith (Senior Manager) – the annual Heads 5-a-side tournament is put on in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, part of the company’s ongoing pledge of support for this wholly worthwhile charity.  A thoroughly enjoyable and successful day, drawing in support from Procurement Teams throughout the South of England, some 50 participators all in all!

We’ve got more events on the horizon, including a fashion show in Winchester, a leadership forum in Reading and many more sporting challenges, all of which will provide Macmillan with additional much needed funds.

I know I’m going to enjoy working with the team here.  The next few months are certainly not going to be without their challenges with the ever changing political and cultural landscape of modern society but there are a lot of very positive things happening within the procurement sector at the moment and we look forward to being part of this here at Procurement Heads.

If you’re interested in having a conversation about opportunities in the market or how me and the team can support you with your own recruitment needs then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
